"Real" Name: Celia Giroux

How long have you roleplayed your character, if at all?:
Very briefly; I've written samples in another application for her, wrote her in some fanfiction scraps and indirectly in a meme thread.

Where have you roleplayed in general and/or with this specific character?:
Currently in [community profile] destinystrings as Zero ([personal profile] strangerfromthedesert) from the same canon.

Are you personally familiar with your character's canon?:
I've replayed through the four Mega Man Zero games recently (about a month or two ago), and regularly reference material from them and the drama tracks when appropriate. I may not remember specific moments, quotes or dialogue within the story in full from time to time, but I usually double-check myself when unsure. That said, it is nearly impossible to know all of Ciel's lines without a separate script file, as a significant number of her lines (especially in MMZ1) are in reaction to how Zero performs in his missions. All in all, I'm usually fairly confident in my familiarity.

Please give us a personal history of your character's life and explain to us in detail how they grow and develop over the course of their canon:
In the world that Ciel comes from, society largely hinges on the concept of machine in the service of man. Many technological advances were made to allow for capable machines called robots (humanoid machines) to function in the 21st century, with sentient variants named Reploids functioning as early as the 22nd century. However, no matter how human-like the Reploids became — even when they possessed the capability to think with free will and feel just like humans could — they continued to be under the service of their creators, and so they were not equals, a concept of continual commentary within the Mega Man Zero canon and of particular importance to Ciel throughout.

Ciel grew up in a post-apocalyptic scenario based on the events of Mega Man X5, part of the Mega Man X canon that takes place before the Mega Man Zero games. Back in that time, a space colony by the name of Eurasia fell to Earth, rendering most of the world uninhabitable, the planet's population further suffering massive casualties (both humans and Reploids) as a result of the Elf Wars depicted sometime between the MMX and MMZ timelines. The general date of the Mega Man Zero series is centuries ahead of our modern times (circa 23XX-24XX), with society centering around sparse and isolated cities, one of which is Neo Arcadia, a location founded nearby Area Zero, the crash site of the Eurasia colony.

Ciel herself did not have a normal or typical upbringing compared to most humans in modern times; scientific advances allowed for genetic engineering to create extremely smart babies, an aspect of her that was called upon when the then-leader of Neo Arcadia, X (a legendary Reploid who helped maintain peace for the sake of humans and Reploids alike for centuries) mysteriously disappeared. The government at that point decided to have Ciel create a replica of X, which she fulfilled when she was six years old. However, as the years went on, her creation (identified by players and later narration as Copy X) strayed far enough from what "X" was meant to be, to the point of declaring many Reploids as Mavericks (irregular Reploids that became a liability and threat to humans' continued existence) despite them not having done anything wrong. As X was known in the past for being a legendary Maverick Hunter, when Mavericks were known for being hostile to humans and other Reploids to the point of committing murder and mass genocide, this inaccuracy in her design of Copy X hurt Ciel deeply and created the base for much of her insecurity with her own decision-making, something that would continue to persist through later choices in her life.

It is mainly due to this as well as her affinity with Reploids that the Resistance was formed by her when she was nine years old. Eventually, a number of the persecuted Reploids escaped with her from the search-and-retrieve/destroy warrants placed on them by Neo Arcadia. As the oppression continued for five years, the 14-years-old leader of the Resistance at the time sought a power of equal force to counter against Copy X and Neo Arcadia and help prevent their downfall: Zero, another legendary Reploid who once fought alongside X himself, but was shrouded in mystery to the point of his existence being perceived as a myth. (Note: It is not known in canon exactly why Ciel believed so strongly in his existence despite this, however it is known from out-of-game canonical information that Ciel's great grandmother once worked with Zero... more on that later.)

In time, Ciel did indeed find Zero and enlisted his aid alongside the Resistance. From the beginning, Ciel put an overwhelming amount of faith in him, rarely wavering in her support throughout the series. Even so, she felt guilty for having Zero risk his life for their sake, much like she felt responsible for pitting the Resistance against Neo Arcadia and allowing Copy X to persecute Reploids due to her own failure in programming. Regardless, Zero's continued support — both in his battles against the forces of Neo Arcadia and in his words of reassurance — allowed her to keep pressing on with her dream for eventual peace and co-existence between Reploids and humans. During half of the series, she strained herself to create an alternative energy source when it was realized that the reason Neo Arcadia persecuted the Reploids in the first place because of an energy shortage.

This was in part due to the efforts of a particular Reploid by the name of Elpizo, originally TK-31, one of the only Reploids in the Resistance to name themselves instead of allow Ciel to do the honors. During his time in the Resistance, he presented Ciel with a special entity termed a Baby Elf, a non-corporeal form of data that possessed strikingly large amounts of energy despite their size and nature. Deciding that pursuing research on the Baby Elf would help achieve the energy source they needed to bring about peace, she allowed Elpizo command of the Resistance, coerced into the idea at the time.

Regardless of his reasoning, he used them as means to meet his own ends against Neo Arcadia, failing spectacularly in Operation Righteous Strike (a full-scale frontal assault against Neo Arcadia) and putting them at risk in a counter-attack aimed at the Resistance Base. He would finally go rogue in pursuit of his own desire for power beyond his own means, enticed by the Mother Elf — an entity of data directly related to the Elf Wars — and its Baby Elves, releasing her against X's will who had locked her away along with its own body, destroying X's body in the process. It is unknown how Ciel reacted directly to the incident and to the subsequent death of Elpizo, but it could be assumed that Ciel took it to heart as another fault of hers, feeling that she should not have trusted Elpizo as she did with command of the Resistance, and that both X's and Elpizo's deaths were because of her own choices.

Despite that setback, her progress continued with the development of the energy source in the following months, nearing its completion around the time that the Resistance discovered an energy signal very similar to the Mother Elf in a space ship that crashed onto Earth. An investigation took place upon Ciel's curiosity, certainly knowing the relation between the Baby Elves she was researching at the time and the Mother Elf itself. It was then that Dr. Weil revealed himself; a megalomaniac scientist that was banished for his responsibility for the Elf Wars and was also Ciel's great grandmother's colleague and rival before he betrayed humanity for his own ill wishes, though the Elf Wars' relation to Ciel is never directly stated in the games.

Dr. Weil returned from exile when his gigantic humanoid creation, Omega, was released from the spaceship's impact, while using a rebuilt and reprogrammed Copy X to coerce his way back into Neo Arcadia and through its government up to the top. With Copy X under his control, Dr. Weil actively sought the Mother Elf for himself, culminating in tense negotiations when the Mother Elf was finally captured and taken into Neo Arcadian custody. At that point, Copy X demanded that Ciel surrender and turn over the CIEL System in return for the Resistance's safety, claiming that they could use the energy source with the Mother Elf to resolve the energy crisis altogether without further incident.

However, just before this negotiation, Dr. Weil & Co. went so far as to demolish a civilian area with a giant missile just to capture the Mother Elf, sacrificing many humans and Reploids along the way. Due to this and despite her own intent for peace, Ciel found herself unable to trust Copy X's offer. Even so, Ciel found herself questioning her own decision, but Zero once again reassured her that she did what she felt was right, and to let the rest be up to him to resolve. Unfortunately, his own attempt to confront Copy X ended in being framed when the then-ruler of Neo Arcadia attempted to morph into Seraphim Mode: Dr. Weil reprogrammed Copy X's morphing code to instead force him to self-destruct without confirmation, leading to his death and making it look like it was Zero's fault. This caused even greater friction between the Resistance and Neo Arcadia's citizens, a point to be expanded on later.

Even though Zero continued to push his way through the enemy forces despite this development, he was too late to stop their greatest fears from happening; Dr. Weil began to re-enact the Elf Wars, combining the technology of the Mother Elf with Omega's architecture to take control of all Reploids across the entire world. Despite Zero being somehow able to retain his free will, the Resistance members held him and Ciel at gunpoint, fully under the sway of Dr. Weil's whims... that is, until X appeared and disrupted Dr. Weil's control of the Resistance members, incapacitating them in the process. With X's help, Zero was transferred to Sub Arcadia, where Omega was transmitting the Mother Elf's ability to control Reploids, and defeated him.

It was during this time when X began to communicate directly to Ciel with the intent of informing her about everything concerning Zero and his past. Centuries ago, the main reason of the Maverick Wars was due to a virus, with Zero being the true original host. After years of combat and strife against the virus, with Zero submitting himself for research, a cure was finally obtained due to the efforts of Ciel's great grandmother and Dr. Weil, in the form of the Mother Elf. During this period however, Zero's being was transferred to a cloned body, while Dr. Weil took control of the original body and the Mother Elf, reprogramming them to be able to control Reploids in a manner similar to the Maverick Virus. Indeed, "Omega" is the name Dr. Weil gave his modified creation, implanting Zero's old body with a visceral, hostile sentience. However, none of this swayed Ciel in the least — she knew that Zero was Zero, even if he had a different body. X then left them, not to be seen again as a Cyber-Elf. Afterwards, Ciel began to develop her interests more broadly, evolving from the mere protection of Reploids with her Resistance into concern for the humans of Neo Arcadia as well, wanting to be able to help them against Dr. Weil's tyranny.

A few months later, Ciel would get that chance to appeal to Neo Arcadians when she and Zero happened upon a caravan of citizens fleeing from the city in a mass exodus, one of the humans being Neige, a journalist who knew of Dr. Weil having a criminal history but was also one of the many with her that blamed the "Mavericks" that made up the Resistance as well for the continued stress of warfare. Their plan was to settle in Area Zero, a land which was previously uninhabitable thanks to the Eurasia Incident centuries ago but was showing signs of returning nature, and build a new life for themselves there. Upon their rescue, Neige decides to withhold information of Zero and Ciel's presence from the rest of the human caravan but warns them not to get their settlement involved in further conflict. And yet, despite finding out that to them it was because of "X"'s death that allowed for Dr. Weil's reign unchecked, she preferred to believe that they could help improve humans' impressions of the Resistance.

At the same time, while Dr. Weil was initially not aware of the settlement, he did not allow for his subjects to live outside of Neo Arcadia, and so he took steps attempting to take over and destroy the new life present in Area Zero by having a Reploid named Craft overlook the operation of "Ragnarok", bringing about further conflict between Neo Arcadia's government and the Resistance. While Zero was attempting to thwart the operation, there were multiple attempts by Ciel to warn and defend the human settlement from Dr. Weil's advances, but they were shunned away each time, including when Neige was captured by Craft and taken into custody. In fact, the humans' disdain for Reploids and wars were so great that they felt Neige had betrayed them, her having actually known Craft for a long time, and further deluded themselves that they could survive on their own. Due to the extent of the humans' hate against Reploids, she wondered if there was a point to rescuing Neige when the humans could not be as accepting of the Resistance. Not long after that though, the humans decided to trust in them and plead for Zero to help save Neige, further fueling Ciel's will to fight for both Reploids and humans.

In rescuing Neige from Craft, they found out that, not only did they come to love each other, it was due to Craft's wish to defend humanity from Dr. Weil that he decided to take command of Operation "Ragnarok", feeling that it was only through obedience to the criminal scientist that they could stay safe. Neige scolded him, feeling he could stand up for his own justice like he used to. That reminder would guide Craft to take control of "Ragnarok" — now revealed to be a completed satellite cannon — against Dr. Weil and Neo Arcadia itself, rather than against Area Zero. As this was quite the opposite extreme implementation of Craft's M.O., Ciel was notably shocked from this development, but instantly requested for the Resistance to help evacuate Neo Arcadia before Ragnarok could be fired, while Zero went to confront Craft. Zero managed to defeat Craft, but could not make it in time to stop it from being fired, resulting in massive casualties in and around the government sector of Neo Arcadia.

Further, even though the satellite became inoperable, it fired again at a random location and then began to fall from orbit towards Earth, heading straight for Area Zero and threatening to re-enact Eurasia's fate. Zero risked himself once more to defeat Dr. Weil and destroy Ragnarok altogether, but found himself unable to stop Ragnarok from entering the atmosphere. Ciel begged Zero to not fall with the Ragnarok, but he chose to sacrifice himself to ensure that Ragnarok would be destroyed by his last decision, taking down Dr. Weil along the way and attempting to ensure that he would also no longer threaten mankind ever again. He asked for Ciel to believe in him one final time despite her fears, and he succeeded in protecting the Earth from the impact of Ragnarok by destroying its core that Dr. Weil had fused into, making the satellite break apart in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, he also went missing, assumed to have not survived the explosion in space. Ciel was devastated by the idea that she might never see him again, but decided that she would ensure that his ideals — the same ones that she fought for — would not be in vain. She only asked that he would come back to her some day...

(Note: The following last paragraph is not explicitly mentioned in the Mega Man Zero canon, but constructed by me from what we're given based on the ending of Mega Man Zero 4, where a still shot of Zero's damaged helmet is seen on barren ground, and based on mention in the Mega Man ZX canon of how Model W, an item of great significance in that series, came to be. How I've written her here is admittedly based on speculation from how I feel she'd react to her findings, however I feel it is of sound notion based on extrapolation of how she has reacted to things in canon thus far.)

In time, the Outlands (the uninhabitable area where most of the fallout of the Ragnarok landed) were searched by Ciel, now around 17 years old, and a team of Reploids. Within the remains, she found two important items: The first was what was left of Zero's helmet, a discovery that would have been enough to shake Ciel to the core, if not for finding something else, that of Weil's own core. This would not be much of a problem except for the fact that Dr. Weil was originally placed in a mechanical body that was capable of regenerating his being no matter how badly damaged or aged he became. As the Reploids around her began to mysteriously become Maverick while being in the presence of the core, Ciel own heart would break asunder, knowing that the efforts of the legendary Reploid she came to feel for were ultimately futile, one more decision that went horribly wrong.

It is upon this event that her stay at Landel's Institute begins.

What point in time are you taking your character from when he/she appears at Landel's and why?:
Ciel is taken from post-MMZ4 (the canonical end of the Mega Man Zero series), as I feel that the conclusion and aftermath of the events of Mega Man Zero 4 sets her up well for a take on her character in context with being in a mental institution; upon her discoveries in the fallout site of the Ragnarok, her faith within herself is shaken, though her will has the potential to endure, circumstances allowed...

Please give us a detailed description of your character's personality:
Ciel comes across as a very kind, gentle person — not once does she ever raise her voice in excessive or unwarranted anger against her friends, the members of the Resistance and Zero, though she is more than willing to firmly defend her beliefs, as she did against Copy X in Mega Man Zero 3 when threatened to turn over the CIEL System (the energy source she completed by that game). She tends to prefer being friendly if possible, feeling that all life, mechanical or not, is worth protecting, exemplified in having the Resistance save the residents of Neo Arcadia from Ragnarok's cannon when it was aimed there due to the events of the story despite the negative tension that was present between them throughout the series.

She appears to possess a protective or maternal streak in her from an early age, taking in Reploids that were persecuted by Neo Arcadia, including a Reploid of young female appearance named Alouette, someone that Ciel named (as she did for all those she came to include within the Resistance) and made a stuffed cat doll for the Reploid to have. Needless to say, Alouette and the others in the Resistance recognize Ciel as a peaceful guardian. Her strong desire to help create this peace is matched only by her zealous drive to make it happen, often leading to long periods of tiring work without break or rest and even making her unintentionally ignore Alouette and others while she focuses on the pursuit of her goals, though she relents when Zero makes her aware of her self-sacrificial nature, something she returns in kind to ensure his own reckless nature stays in check.

Perhaps this is not entirely due to altruistic reasoning: There is a massive guilt complex within Ciel, born from the mistakes she made when creating Copy X, the feeling continuing to fester within her for years. Without knowing how she could have grown up without that incident, it's difficult to discern how much of her care is truly due to a pure desire to help others, whether they need it or not. That is not to say that she mothers others overbearingly or does things for them when they can do things themselves, however she often concerns herself with others' welfare, most often when it came to caring for Zero's well-being because of the risk entailed in his missions. In turn, Zero reassured her of the decisions she made when he supported them, and cautioned her to not risk her life when he could do so for her instead during the decisions he didn't support. Indeed, her insecurity with her prior decision-making mixing with her stubborn willpower sometimes makes her just as reckless as the Reploid she put all her faith in, wanting to make each new chance to make things right matter as much as possible.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean that she is strong on her own. Often, she acts with a naive nature that doesn't let her see negative consequences of her actions until it's too late usually. Many times in the canon she is deeply affected by events that come about from her own doing, from freezing up when the Reploids she came with to find Zero died, to the continued assaults of Neo Arcadia on the Resistance base making her realize that they were no longer safe there despite remaining stationary and practically marking themselves as a target due to their own actions in tandem with Zero. And yet, for things that have already happened, she is all too aware that such things might be looked down upon, and that makes her isolated from others in that sense, not wanting to let people have a bad impression of her, that being the main reason why she withheld such knowledge of being Copy X's creator from Zero. Even with constant support from the Resistance and Zero, she continually questions herself on whether her actions and decisions are the right one. Because of this, she was often depressed earlier in her life, and without a support network or at least someone to take some of the stress off of her, she is effectively a constant victim of her own negative emotions and self-depreciating reasoning.

Strangely, her interest in a co-existence between humans and Reploids wasn't always entirely apparent. Early on in the series, most of her concern was more on simply protecting the Reploids in the Resistance from Neo Arcadia. As an example, she trusted in a Reploid named Elpizo in Mega Man Zero 2, despite his negative disposition against humans, with the management of the Resistance while she threw herself headfirst into researching and developing a new energy source, the one true hope she had left for a peaceful solution. It wasn't until later on that the dream of co-existence became more apparent, coincidentally around the time that the real X talked with her at the end of Mega Man Zero 3. She grew up with X's values in mind when she originally programmed Copy X, so it is likely that the conflict that occurred between Neo Arcadia and the Reploids made that dream die out for her, at least temporarily, especially when she felt at fault for it. In Mega Man Zero 4 however, that dream is revived more powerfully than ever, realizing the possibility of it coming true again even when reproached during interacting with humans that escaped from Neo Arcadia's later treatment at the hands of Dr. Weil. That said, she will often latch on to whatever ideals and hope that remain present, and that usually was in the form of her faith in Zero, going so far as to deny his apparent death at the end of Mega Man Zero 4 when the Ragnarok was destroyed, claiming he was still alive if only to save face and avoid breaking down publicly.

Please give us a physical description of your character:
Ciel stands at what is called a "modest stature" by wiki articles; throughout the games, Ciel stands somewhat shorter than Zero, and going by his height as depicted by Ginga's Zero as 5'3", She would probably be about 4'10" to 5'. She has a thin frame and slender limbs, wearing long blonde hair (usually done up in a ponytail if allowed) with bangs and blue eyes.

What kinds of otherwordly abilities does your character have, if any?:
None.

If present, how do you plan to tweak these powers to make your character appropriately hindered in the setting of Landel's?:
N/A.

Does your character have any non-otherworldly abilities/training that surpass the norm?:
Ciel was genetically engineered to be a child prodigy, particularly to the task of Reploid Engineering, though she is exceptionally talented in a number of scientific fields: During the canon, she researches on alternative energy sources, especially on ideas linked to Cyber-Elves, which are in turn non-corporeal forms of data and are also the forms Reploids can take after they perish. She is also incredibly resourceful due to her intelligence, as she formed the Resistance under the nose of Neo Arcadia at a young age of nine and built Copy X, an almost (tragically so) perfect imitation of the original X, at an even younger age of six years old.

What do you see your character doing in the scope of the game and how do you plan to use the setting of Landel's Institute to develop them and affect their psychology in a unique, interesting way?:
Upon her arrival in the Institute, Ciel is badly shaken by her discoveries in the Outlands, but at the same time will find her situation beyond scientific logic reasoning. She will be torn between submitting to her fate, questioning which reality is the greater nightmare, and wanting to at least escape if not find her way back, thinking that going back to the Outlands and finding a way to stop what's left of Dr. Weil from threatening the world will be the only way to keep it safe. At her best, she will take it upon herself to help the patients of the Institute, and at worst, she will be more concerned with getting herself out. As time goes on, this idea of internal conflict will extend to her interactions with other patients, in particular with finding Zero and X, both of whom will appear drastically different to her than she's used to in appearance, and in some cases X's personality.

Ultimately, her conflict on which reality is the truth, and how long she can keep hold of what's left of her beliefs and willpower, will shape her path here. Should she trust in the coincidence that every patient in Landel's has memories of back home, she will likely also trust in her gut feeling that her memories aren't lies, but the world she lives in now will be real enough for her to still question herself. Finally, if she wills herself to believe that the Zero in the Institute is the real one despite his now-human body, her own feelings towards Zero might short-circuit her own logic anyway, and cause her to attach herself to the person that held her together through a significant and important portion of her life.

Given that this RP takes place in an unsettling and outright horrific environment, how do you justify your character as being appropriate in both body and mind for this kind of setting?:
Ciel is in an unstable frame of mind during the canon point I'm taking her from, taken away from her world without being better able to examine and process the information of her discoveries and further her resolve to bring about what will become the basis of the Mega Man ZX canon. With that in mind, her reactions to her experiences in the Institute will be more complex and more able to be expanded on compared to other canon points, where she either doesn't have enough life experience to be more than an afraid little girl or is too mature to be fully negatively affected by the goings-on within.

Third-Person Sample:

The blare of the intercom made Ciel twitch awake, her form staying still for the duration with her eyes giving full attention to the wall in front of her and her ears to the message being relayed. The blonde girl was expecting something to happen when night came from what she was told earlier in the day, but fatigue had set in and lulled her into brief unconsciousness. Her heart pounded as the words of that man — Landel, was it? — leered verbally and sneered in tone at the patients of his institute. With relief, soon enough the announcement came to an end, and she slowly raised herself to view her surroundings. It was terribly dark, and-- wait, was the door open? She shuddered, breath catching into a silent gasp in her throat. A frightened search with her eyes later proved no immediate threat, which allowed her to calm herself and assess her situation.

It would certainly be safer to stay in here for the time being, but something within her stopped herself from giving the notion much consideration. Ciel had already made a scene earlier today, trying to forcibly escape the building, and her feelings now were still as moving, if conflicted, as when she committed that act. If anything, she would have to be more subtle in her escape from here on out. The teenager shuffled quietly to move out of bed, her hand grazing the underside of her pillow to find a hard object on her fingertips before she could stand up. A flashlight? She looked it over before getting up. With a basic search of the room later providing no other useful items besides a small radio, she took her scavenged items into each hand and moved towards the door.

Ciel hoped that the next day she would wake up, back at the Resistance Base, to be able to attribute this bizarre and surreal nightmare to the effects of that insidious core. She had to find a way back. If they weren't going to kill her off, she had to take her chances and explore the compound when the nurses and doctors weren't restricting her every waking moment during the daytime. And, even if this really was her going crazy, she had to know. If this felt so real to her, she had to know why she still remembered everything.

The girl poked her head out and looked this way and that, seeing nothing and no one around as the fog of the night crept inside. Was this really a good idea? She really was by herself now, not knowing anyone. She could still turn back. But she continued to remind herself of her last memories of the disfigured helmet that brought her both joy and bitterness, the last surviving possession of the shining beacon of hope that helped her press on all those years of time that she couldn't simply deny within her head. With a click of the flashlight, she began to move down the hall, the shining light being the only guide she had left after everything that had happened to her.

First-Person Sample:

Why does it have to be this way?

I've been in this "mental institution" for a few days now, but I still don't understand any of it. How we've come to be here, why we all have memories of our own worlds when the staff simply thinks we're all crazy, what the truth is behind all this.

And who you are. Why do you have a human body? Is this even possible? You can't be al
[Pen taps.] I thought

I thought you were dead.

I don't know what to do to solve all of these things. I'll try to stay sane here, but this defies everything I've come to know. This is nothing short of fantasy. A horrible sham of a fantasy, but sometimes I wonder.

[There is a block of text illegible to read, the scratching lines blocking the admittance of inner thoughts.]

I'm such a terrible person. But I'll live with it, if I can do something about this. Something. Anything. I don't want to be here. I don't want them to be here. If the only option we have is escape from this place and live together in peace, I'll fight for that. It's what Alex X would want, too.

Earlier I found out about a bulletin board in the Sun Room. I'll try to go there sometime today and see if I can find out some things from the others here. And
[Pen taps.] see if anyone else is having problems during the night. Maybe we can help them, too.

Completely optional question for first-time applicants: How did you find out about this RP and why are you interested in playing in it?:
I was introduced to Damned through interacting with Ginga and Jen in a Dear Mun post here. I was very moved with my own idea of applying to it once I read on threads involving them (Zero and X respectively), especially on their usage of Ciel as Celia Giroux, as seen here.
